Western Odisha's connectivity will be transformed by seven tunnels, wildlife protection initiatives, and economic expansion.
Bhubaneswar: With the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) granting Stage II forest clearance for track construction between Daspalla and Adhenigarh, Odisha's ambitious Khurda Road-Balangir railway project has advanced significantly. An important turning point in one of Odisha's most revolutionary infrastructure projects has been reached with this long-awaited permission.
In order to protect the area's abundant biodiversity, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has attested that careful thought has gone into the design of viaducts, tunnels, and animal passageways. This project is among the most environmentally conscious railway improvements in India since cutting-edge technical solutions have been used to minimise tree cutting and preserve forest cover.
The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Odisha, has approved the wildlife conservation plan that the project team created in collaboration with the state's forest department in order to lessen the environmental effect. Important actions consist of:
Underpasses and wildlife corridors to guarantee the safe migration of animals
Overpassing natural streams with bridges to stop habitat fragmentation
Minimal deforestation through railway alignment optimisation
As the project draws to a close, Odisha is poised to enter a new age of connection that will improve accessibility, economic vibrancy, and environmental sustainability in Western Odisha.

12.76 km of Tunnels Through Dense Forests Astounded Engineers
The building of seven tunnels, totalling 12.76 km along a 75-km section between Daspalla and Purunakatak, is a major project feature. These tunnels will pass through difficult terrain, improving connectivity and causing the least amount of environmental disturbance. In order to protect the area's abundant biodiversity, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has attested that careful thought has gone into the design of viaducts, tunnels, and animal passageways. More Than 226 km of Tracks Have Been Completed
An astounding 226 kilometres of the 301-kilometer railway line have already been finished:- Daspalla is 106 km from Khurda Road.
- Balangir to Purunakatak is 120 kilometres away.
- The final 75 km between Purunakatak and Daspalla, which were delayed because of difficult forest clearances, are already under way.

Impact on the Economy and Society: A Revolution for Western Odisha
The Khurda-Balangir railway line would greatly cut down on travel time between Bhubaneswar and Balangir once it is open, which will be advantageous to both businesses and people. It is anticipated that the enhanced rail link will:- Facilitate speedier access to markets and industries to increase trade and commerce.
- Improve rural areas' access to healthcare and education
- Create new jobs in the tourist, logistics, and construction industries.
- Encourage industry and agricultural developments throughout western Odisha.
Last Push: One Step Nearer to Finishing
Now that the forest has been cleared, construction on the final 75 km is expected to pick up speed. When finished, the Khurda Road-Balangir railway project would revolutionise Odisha's transport system by enhancing freight flow, passenger convenience, and general growth. As the project draws to a close, Odisha is poised to enter a new age of connection that will improve accessibility, economic vibrancy, and environmental sustainability in Western Odisha.
