Government Announces Padma Awardees Ahead of Republic Day Celebrations 

New Delhi: The Union government has announced the Padma Awards 2025, recognizing 113 Padma Shri, 19 Padma Bhushan, and 7 Padma Vibhushan recipients for their outstanding contributions across various fields. The list, released on the eve of India's 76th Republic Day, includes freedom fighters, scientists, artists, sports icons, and social workers, highlighting India's rich diversity of talent and dedication to national service.

Celebrating Unsung Heroes and National Icons 

This year's awards recognize several unsung heroes who have contributed immensely to society. Harvinder Singh, a para-archer from Haryana known as "Kaithal ka Eklavya", has been awarded the Padma Shri for becoming India's first Paralympic gold medalist in archery at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. 
In an inspiring recognition, Libia Lobo Sardesai, a veteran of Goa's freedom movement, has been honored for her pivotal role in operating the underground radio station ‘Voz da Liberdade’ (Voice of Freedom) in 1955 to mobilize resistance against Portuguese rule. 

Other notable Padma Shri recipients include

  • Neerja Bhatla, a gynecologist specializing in cervical cancer prevention, recognized for her life-saving contributions to women's health. 
  • Bhim Singh Bhavesh, a social worker from Bihar’s Bhojpur district, for his two decades of work uplifting the marginalized Musahar community through his foundation, Nayee Asha. 
  • P. Datchanamoorthy, a maestro of the South Indian percussion instrument Thavil, for over five decades of contribution to Indian classical music. 
  • L. Hangthing, a fruit farmer from Noklak, Nagaland, who introduced and cultivated non-native fruits for more than 30 years, revolutionizing agricultural practices in the region. 

Padma Vibhushan: Honouring the Highest Achievers 

The Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, has been awarded to seven distinguished personalities, including: 
  • Justice (Retd.) Jagdish Singh Khehar – Recognized for his contributions to Indian judiciary and constitutional law. 
  • MT Vasudevan Nair (Posthumous) – Honored for his pioneering work in Malayalam literature. 
  • Osamu Suzuki (Posthumous) – The visionary who led Suzuki Motor Corporation to become a global automotive leader, transforming India's automobile industry. 
  • Sharda Sinha (Posthumous) – The legendary folk singer who enriched Indian music with her melodious Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Hindi compositions. 

Padma Bhushan: Recognizing Distinguished Service 

The Padma Bhushan, awarded for distinguished service of high order, has been conferred on 19 personalities, including: 
  • Bibek Debroy (Posthumous) – Renowned economist and former Chairman of the PM’s Economic Advisory Council. 
  • PR Sreejesh – The former Indian hockey goalkeeper, who played a key role in India's Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medal victory. 
  • Manohar Joshi (Posthumous) – Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Lok Sabha Speaker, for his service in politics and public affairs. 
  • Pankaj Udhas (Posthumous) – A legendary ghazal singer, recognized for his immense contribution to Indian music. 
  • Shekhar Kapur – The globally acclaimed filmmaker, director of classics like "Bandit Queen" and "Elizabeth", honored for his contributions to Indian and international cinema. 

Padma Shri: A Tribute to Excellence Across Fields 

Among the 113 Padma Shri awardees, the list includes individuals from arts, literature, medicine, sports, agriculture, and social work. Some notable recipients are: 
  • Arijit Singh – The iconic playback singer known for his soul-stirring music and Bollywood hits. 
  • Ricky Kej – A Grammy Award-winning music composer, honored for his contributions to environmental and global music. 
  • R. Ashwin – The Indian cricketer and one of the country’s most successful off-spinners. 
  • Jagdish Joshila – A literary figure known for his contributions to Hindi and Nimadi literature. 
  • Soniya Nityanand – A leading medical researcher in hematology, working on advancements in blood disorders and transfusion medicine. 
  • Vinayak Lohani – A social entrepreneur, dedicated to educating and rehabilitating underprivileged children through his organization Parivaar Education Society.
