Rairangpur: President Droupadi Murmu made a passionate homecoming to her hometown of Uparbeda in the Mayurbhanj district on Friday. Since taking the esteemed position of President of India on July 25, 2022, this was her first trip to her ancestral home. For the nation's first tribal president, who was born into a Santali family in this quiet town, the trip was an emotional stroll down memory lane.
The locals enthusiastically and warmly welcomed President Murmu when she arrived. The small community, which has watched her rise to the nation’s highest Constitutional post, welcomed her with open arms. The President’s ancestral home and the entire village were decorated to celebrate the occasion.

President Murmu’s first stop was Uparbeda Government Upper Primary School, her alma mater. She has a particular place in her heart for the school since she remembers learning there as a youngster in its modest classrooms with mud walls. Speaking to the pupils, she said,

I can clearly recall my teacher, Madan Mohan Sir, taking me into his household when I was studying for the Class-VII scholarship test. I stayed with his children while preparing. The love and support I received from this village and my school are nothing short of heavenly,” she said, visibly emotional.
Honoring Her Mentors
In a touching gesture, President Murmu felicitated three of her former teachers during a special function. The President gave recognition to her headmaster, Bisheswar Mohanta; her class teacher, Basudev Behere; and her teachers in Classes IV and V, Basanta Kumar Giri, for their significant contributions to her life.
