Cyclone Fengal Approaches Tamil Nadu: Heavy Rains, High Winds, and Coastal Warnings Issued

The current path and intensity of the cyclone

Cyclone Fengal is around 360 km north of Trincomalee, 230 km east-northeast of Nagapattinam, 210 km east of Puducherry, and 210 km southeast of Chennai, on November 29 according to the IMD. Its latitude is 11.8°N and its longitude is 81.7°E. (Moving north-northwestward at a speed of 7 km/h, it is expected to intensify further before crossing the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the afternoon of November 30. Wind speeds are predicted to reach 70-80 km/h, gusting to 90 km/h, during landfall.

Heavy Rainfall and Wind Forecast

IMD officials have forecast widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh. The heaviest impact is anticipated along the coastal districts, particularly between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram.) Dr. S. Balachandran, the director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, warned of very high rainfall in certain regions in a media appearance.
"Today's wind speed is 50-60 km/h. Dr. Balachandran said. "Between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM tomorrow, intense rainfall is expected, with scattered heavy to very heavy downpours in several districts."
Red alerts have also been issued by the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre for the districts of Nellore, Tirupati, and Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, indicating "extremely heavy rainfall" throughout the course of the following day.

Precautionary Actions and Warnings

In anticipation of the cyclone's arrival, authorities have intensified their preparations. The Puducherry Fisheries Department has encouraged fishermen to move their boats and equipment to safer areas and cautioned them against going out to sea. Residents in low-lying and coastal regions have been urged to stay indoors and adhere to safety precautions, and emergency personnel are on high alert.
Relief activities, including the prepositioning of rescue teams, food supplies, and medical support, are being coordinated by state disaster management teams in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Plans for evacuation have been made for areas that are vulnerable to flooding, and makeshift shelters have been set up to house displaced people.
Threats of flooding and high tides
There are serious threats from high tides and possible flooding as Cyclone Fengal gets closer to the shore. Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and other coastal areas are preparing for storm surges. Experts have cautioned that the combination of high tides and excessive rains might cause metropolitan areas to become waterlogged, which would disrupt daily life.

Public Caution and the IMD Red Alert

Residents of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh are being advised to exercise caution due to a red signal issued by the IMD. The storm is predicted to hit coastal regions hardest, with powerful gusts and heavy rainfall potentially damaging infrastructure and property.
The IMD stressed how crucial it is to follow cautions. "Coastal areas will be most affected by Cyclone Fengal," an IMD spokesman said. "We urge the public to avoid unnecessary travel, ensure safety measures, and cooperate with local authorities."
The advent of Cyclone Fengal portends a difficult period for Tamil Nadu and the surrounding areas. The emphasis is still on protecting the people and causing the least amount of damage since severe rain and wind are predicted. Authorities have advised people to take the required measures and to be informed via official channels.
