Divyang Asha Kendra to Open Soon in Puri: A New Dawn for Differently-Abled Citizens

A New Center for Hope and Support

The Divyang Asha Kendra aims to be a one-stop solution for all needs of differently-abled individuals. With the Odisha state government identifying and allocating land for the project, the center is expected to open soon. The objective is to create a space where people with disabilities can receive assistance, guidance, and support, without the need to attend distant camps for their requirements. The center will also foster an inclusive environment where they can access essential services conveniently.

Empowering the Differently-Abled at Religious Sites

One of the notable promises made during the announcement was the assurance of improved access for differently-abled individuals at Puri's Shri Jagannath Temple and other major religious destinations across India. Special arrangements will be made for them to have exclusive darshan (viewing of the deity) at these sacred sites, ensuring that no barriers hinder their spiritual experiences.

Minister's Commitment at Social Rights Camp

The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, B. L. Verma, during a Social Rights Camp organized at the Bhola Nath Vidyapith campus. The Minister emphasized the government's commitment to improving the lives of differently-abled citizens and ensuring that they receive the best possible support. He highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive society where no one is left behind, and everyone has equal opportunities to thrive.

Large-Scale Distribution of Assistive Devices

In a major step towards providing practical assistance, the event saw the distribution of assistive devices to over 2,000 differently-abled individuals and senior citizens from Puri district’s 11 blocks. Through the Social Rights Ministry of the Government of India, in partnership with the General Insurance Corporation (GIC) under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the camp successfully distributed essential mobility and assistive devices.

The breakdown of beneficiaries included:

  • 114 differently-abled individuals and 16 senior citizens from Puri Municipality.
  • 74 differently-abled individuals and 22 senior citizens from Puri Sadar region.
  • A total of 2,142 differently-abled individuals and senior citizens received various assistive devices.

Government’s Financial Support for the Initiative

The government, recognizing the importance of such initiatives, has allocated a grant of ₹2.33 crore for the distribution of assistive devices. Out of the total, 500 individuals received their devices during the camp, bringing immense joy and relief to many who had long awaited such support. The remaining devices will be distributed across different blocks in the coming weeks.

A Positive Impact on Lives

The smiles and gratitude expressed by the recipients of the devices were a testament to the life-changing impact this initiative is already making. For many, these assistive devices are not just tools for mobility, but symbols of empowerment, enabling them to lead more independent lives. The sense of joy and hope was palpable as the individuals received their equipment, which will help them navigate daily challenges with greater ease.

Expanding Outreach and Inclusivity

The Divyang Asha Kendra is just the beginning. The center’s creation signals a broader commitment to addressing the needs of differently-abled individuals across Odisha and beyond. As part of the government’s vision, future camps and initiatives will further expand outreach, ensuring that every person in need receives adequate support, whether it be for mobility, communication, or daily living assistance.

A Model of Social Responsibility

The collaboration between the Government of India and corporate entities like GIC underlines the potential of public-private partnerships in driving social change. These initiatives not only improve the quality of life for differently-abled citizens but also demonstrate the power of collective effort in building a more inclusive society.

Conclusion

With the imminent opening of the Divyang Asha Kendra in Puri, the government is taking a bold step towards ensuring that differently-abled individuals are provided with the resources and support they need to lead dignified lives. This initiative is a shining example of what can be achieved when government policies, corporate responsibility, and community welfare come together to uplift those in need. As we look forward to the center's opening, the hope is that it will inspire similar projects across the country, leading to a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
