Odisha to Experience Intense Rainfall in the Next Few Days
Bhubaneswar: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across various districts of Odisha due to the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. This low-pressure system has developed over the central-western Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha. As a result, Odisha is expected to experience significant rainfall over the next two days.
Heavy Rainfall Expected in Several Districts
The IMD's forecast indicates that districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Bolangir, and Nuapada are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall today. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also expected in these areas. Residents of these regions have been advised to remain cautious as flash floods and waterlogging may occur due to the intense rainfall.
For tomorrow, heavy rains are predicted in Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Bolangir. Several coastal and interior parts of Odisha will experience moderate to heavy rainfall during this period.
Meteorological Analysis
According to the IMD's senior meteorologist Dr. Surendra Nath Pasupalan, the low-pressure area that formed over southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh yesterday is likely to move towards Chhattisgarh by tonight. This system is expected to bring widespread rain to Odisha’s coastal regions, with rainfall accumulations ranging between 60mm to 70mm over the next three days.
Districts such as Bhadrak, Balasore, and nearby areas are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, with overall rain accumulation exceeding 80mm over the next three days. The rainfall is likely to continue until September 27.
Caution for Coastal and Southern Districts
Districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada are also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall during this period. The total rainfall in these areas could range between 25mm to 30mm over the next three days.
The IMD has issued warnings for flash floods, especially in low-lying areas, and advised farmers to take precautionary measures to protect their crops. The low-pressure system is expected to affect not just Odisha but also neighboring states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh as it gradually moves northwest. It is predicted to reach Uttarakhand by October 1, potentially causing further heavy rains in the northern regions.
Extended Weather Forecast
Between October 1 and 3, districts such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, and Sambalpur are expected to experience significant rainfall. Coastal areas, particularly in southern Odisha, will face scattered showers during this period.
IMD's Advisory
The IMD has urged the public, especially those residing in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and stay updated with weather alerts. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea as the weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal are expected to worsen in the coming days. Authorities are on high alert to mitigate the impact of potential flooding and landslides, especially in vulnerable regions.
