Bhubaneswar: In an inspiring address during the state-level ‘Guru Divas’ celebration at Lok Seva Bhavan, Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, underscored the vital role that teachers, often revered as ‘Gurus,’ play in sculpting the future of society. Majhi, himself a former educator, lauded the immeasurable contributions of teachers, describing them as the "torchbearers of knowledge" and guardians of the nation’s future.
At the heart of his message was a powerful call to action for the teaching community to go beyond mere academics and foster a deep-rooted sense of values, ethics, and principles among students. “Our future depends on our ability to instill both education and character in our children,” Majhi remarked, reinforcing the importance of holistic development in students, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Honoring the Guru-Disciple Tradition
Reflecting on his own journey from a teacher to a leader, Majhi recalled the rich legacy of the guru-disciple tradition in India. “Teachers have always been the backbone of our education system. They have shaped generations, and it is essential to recognize their sacrifices,” he said, emphasizing the timeless respect that society owes to its educators.
Majhi took this opportunity to highlight Odisha's progressive approach to education, announcing two key initiatives aimed at transforming the state's academic landscape. The ‘Madho Singh Hata Kharch’ scheme is set to significantly reduce dropout rates among tribal students, benefiting an estimated 3 lakh students. Additionally, the ‘Godabarish Mishra Adarsh Primary School’ scheme will see one school in each panchayat transformed into a model institution, setting new standards for quality education in rural areas.
A Assurance to Digital and Inclusive Education
The event also marked the launch of two ambitious programs, Nipun Odisha and the Digital Education Empowerment Program (DEEP), designed to equip students with essential digital literacy skills. Under DEEP, students will gain exposure to computer education and coding, ensuring they are well-prepared for the demands of a rapidly digitizing world. Majhi emphasized the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that even students in the remotest areas of Odisha are empowered with modern educational tools.
“Technology is no longer optional; it’s a necessity,” Majhi stated, urging educators to embrace digital platforms and methodologies to enhance learning outcomes. This commitment aligns with the state’s broader vision of making education both inclusive and future-ready.
Education Ministers Reinforce State's Vision
School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, who attended the celebration as guests of honor, echoed the Chief Minister’s sentiments. Gond emphasized the indispensable role of teachers, stating, “Without teachers, knowledge is an unattainable treasure.” He elaborated on the government’s ongoing efforts to raise the quality of education across the state, focusing on teacher training, infrastructure development, and curriculum improvements.
Minister Suraj, on the other hand, encouraged students to view their educational achievements as stepping stones towards greater aspirations. “Your accomplishments today should fuel your resolve for tomorrow,” he said, praising Odisha’s education sector for its strides towards the effective implementation of the NEP 2020.
Recognizing Excellence: Honoring Odisha’s Brightest Minds
In a heartwarming gesture of recognition, the ‘Guru Divas’ celebration also saw the felicitation of over 44,728 students from 30 districts across the state through a virtual ceremony. The event featured the prestigious ‘Mukhyamantri Siksha Puraskar’ and ‘Mukhyamantri Bhasa Brutti Puraskar,’ honoring the best students from the 10th and 12th grades of Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas and Higher Secondary Boards. This recognition highlights the state’s commitment to fostering a culture of academic excellence and rewarding the hard work of its students.
At the district level, the "Vidyarthi Sambardhana Samaroh" was held in conjunction with the main event, adding a personal touch to the celebrations. These honors not only celebrate student success but also motivate the next generation to strive for greater achievements.
Looking Ahead: A Brighter Future for Education in Odisha
Chief Minister Majhi’s vision for Odisha’s educational future is both ambitious and inspiring. Through initiatives like the ‘Madho Singh Hata Kharch’ and the ‘Godabarish Mishra Adarsh Primary School’ schemes, coupled with the state’s renewed focus on digital education, Odisha is setting a precedent for educational reform that other states can follow.
As Odisha continues to march forward on the path of progress, the role of ‘Gurus’ remains central. Majhi’s message on ‘Guru Divas’ serves as a reminder of the transformative power of education and the lasting impact that teachers have on society.
The celebration, which combined tradition with modernity, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to nurturing both the minds and hearts of its students, ensuring that they are not just educated, but also empowered to shape a better tomorrow.
