Odisha Strengthens Mpox Surveillance at Key Entry Points

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has ramped up its efforts to monitor and prevent the spread of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) by enforcing strict screening measures for international travelers. These measures were announced on Wednesday, focusing on the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar and various seaports across the state.

Odisha Strengthens Mpox Surveillance at Key Entry Points

The Public Health Directorate has issued new guidelines that require mandatory health checks for all international passengers arriving at these entry points. The primary aim is to identify and isolate any potential mpox cases, ensuring the safety of the public. Travelers who exhibit symptoms such as fever, extreme fatigue, or unexplained rashes will be categorized as high-risk and treated with caution.

According to the Director of Public Health, Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, anyone who has visited countries reporting confirmed or suspected cases of mpox in the last 21 days, or has come into contact with individuals suspected or confirmed to have the disease, will undergo thorough screening. Special attention will be given to those displaying early symptoms, and these individuals will be isolated in designated transit facilities to prevent further spread.

The state’s health department is closely coordinating with central agencies to ensure robust preventive measures are in place.

The state's integrated disease surveillance program will be notified immediately of any suspected cases to ensure swift action and coordination. The proactive steps by Odisha authorities underline the state's commitment to preventing a potential mpox outbreak, while also keeping international travelers informed and safe.

This enhanced surveillance is part of a global effort to control the spread of mpox, a disease that has seen a rise in cases worldwide. With these precautions, Odisha aims to protect its citizens and minimize the risk of transmission.
