Bhubaneswar: In a bid to accelerate the shift towards eco-friendly transportation, the Odisha government has extended robust financial support to electric vehicle (EV) owners across the state. Since the 2022-23 financial year, more than Rs 154 crore in subsidies have been provided to EV buyers, underlining the government's commitment to promoting sustainable mobility. The initiative, spearheaded by Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, has played a pivotal role in encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles throughout Odisha.
The state government’s subsidy program, which was introduced in September 2021, has seen remarkable success in boosting EV registrations. In the 2022-23 fiscal year alone, the government disbursed Rs 8.83 crore in subsidies, a figure that soared to Rs 57.21 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal year. By August 2024, subsidies had been allocated for a total of 38,766 EVs registered in the state, demonstrating the increasing popularity of electric vehicles among Odisha residents.
To make EVs more accessible, the subsidy scheme offers up to Rs 20,000 for two-wheelers and Rs 30,000 for three-wheelers. This financial assistance has made electric vehicles a more attractive option for consumers, encouraging more people to switch from conventional fuel-powered vehicles to greener alternatives. The program aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate the environmental impact of transportation.
The Odisha government’s proactive approach to fostering sustainable development reflects its broader vision of reducing carbon emissions and creating a cleaner environment.
