Language, Literature, and Cultural Preservation: A Holistic Discussion at Bolagarh

Nayagarh: (Reported by Sanatan Mahakud): Bolagarh recently became the hub of an insightful discussion on language, literature, and cultural preservation, organized collaboratively by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi and the Baladurga Odia Bhasha Sahitya Sanskruti Gabeshana Parishad. The event, held at the Nandighosha Bhavan, was a significant gathering of intellectuals, poets, and cultural enthusiasts, who shared their thoughts on the role of language and literature in safeguarding and promoting Odia culture. This symposium also featured a unique poetry recitation session, adding artistic depth to the proceedings.

A Gathering of Intellectuals 

The session was presided over by Gopinath Khadanga, who led the intellectual discourse with grace. Honored to be part of this cultural assembly, local MLA Pradeep Kumar Sahu served as the chief guest. In his speech, Sahu urged everyone to embrace their roots, expressing a heartfelt appeal to honor *Maa* (Mother), *Mati* (Soil), and *Matrubhasha* (Mother tongue). His address emphasized the importance of staying connected with one’s heritage and the vital role that language plays in cultural identity. 

The keynote address was delivered by renowned academic Dr. Bairagi Charan Pattnaik, who highlighted the significance of Odia literature in preserving cultural values. Citing examples from the works of Odia poets and writers, he illustrated how literary creations reflect and preserve cultural ethos. According to him, writers and poets act as custodians of culture, and their works serve as vehicles for transmitting values across generations. 

Celebrating Literary Excellence 

One of the distinguished guests of the event was veteran poet Zahiroddin Khan, who delved deep into the influence of medieval Odia poetry on the region's culture. His talk provided a historical perspective on how Odia literature has played a pivotal role in defining the state’s cultural landscape. By sharing excerpts from classical Odia poems, Khan demonstrated how cultural nuances were embedded in the literary fabric of the medieval era. 

The event began with a soulful rendition of devotional songs by Avinash Subudhi, setting a peaceful tone for the day’s discussions. Poet Prafulla Kumar Mahapatra introduced the esteemed guests, while Raghunath Dalabehera, the editor, presented an editorial overview of the program’s objectives. Prafulla Kumar Paikray’s self-composed welcome song provided a warm and creative start to the event.

Poetry as a Reflection of Culture 

The poetry recital was one of the highlights of the day, with several poets taking the stage to share their original works. The session was coordinated by poet Ramesh Chandra Sahu and convenor Srikant Kumar Nayak. A spectrum of literary expressions was showcased, ranging from traditional to modern styles. Prominent poets like Bhaktaballabh Pattnaik, Rabindra Kumar Nayak, Dibyalochan Bharimal, Santosh Kumar Sahu, Prabhat Kumar Jena, Sebati Parida, Basant Manjari Paramguru, and Sarojini Devi shared poems that reflected the essence of Odia culture and values. 

Their poems touched upon themes like nature, identity, social change, and devotion, capturing the spirit of Odia heritage in a creative and thought-provoking manner. These poets exemplified how poetry can serve as a powerful medium for cultural expression, resonating with audiences both young and old. 

Honoring Excellence in Education and Literature 

The event was not just about speeches and poetry but also about recognizing and honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to Odia literature, culture, and education. Pooja Parida, who achieved a commendable 99% score in her Matric examination, was felicitated for her outstanding academic achievement, especially in her mother tongue, Odia. 

Additionally, poet Ramesh Chandra Sahu, convenor Srikant Nayak, veteran poet Brajakishore Samantaray, and educator Manmohan Kahalsingh were honored with citations and gifts for their invaluable contributions to the promotion of Odia literature and education. Their dedication to preserving the language and culture through their work and commitment was celebrated with enthusiasm and respect. 

A Cultural Legacy Worth Preserving 

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Manoj Kumar Gumansingh, acknowledging the efforts of everyone involved in making the program a success. The day’s discussions, poetry recitations, and recognitions underscored the collective responsibility of society to protect and promote Odia language and culture. This event was not just a gathering but a reminder of the cultural legacy that needs to be preserved for future generations. 

The session in Bolagarh served as a platform where intellectual discourse met artistic expression, ensuring that Odia language, literature, and culture remain vibrant and dynamic in an ever-changing world. By blending the wisdom of the past with the creativity of the present, the event successfully fostered a deeper appreciation for Odia cultural heritage.
