Aadhaar Free Update Deadline Extended: New Deadline Announced

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the deadline for free Aadhaar updates, allowing individuals to make necessary changes to their details until December 14, 2024. This extension is aimed at benefiting millions of Aadhaar holders, particularly those who have not updated their Aadhaar information in over a decade.

While UIDAI encourages individuals to review and update their Aadhaar details, especially if the card was issued more than 10 years ago, making these updates is not mandatory. However, it is recommended for ensuring the accuracy of information linked to your Aadhaar number, especially for future verification purposes.

Official Announcement

In a recent social media post on X (formerly Twitter), UIDAI confirmed the extension, stating:

"UIDAI extends update document online on free process till 14th December 2024; to benefit millions of Aadhaar Number Holders. This service is only available on myAadhaar portal."

This initiative has been undertaken to ensure Aadhaar holders can easily update their documents and details without incurring any fees.

Why Is Updating Aadhaar Important?

Aadhaar serves as a unique identification number for every Indian resident, linked to their biometric data. This makes it impossible for any individual to have a duplicate number, preventing issues such as fake or ghost identities. By eliminating these, Aadhaar helps plug leakages in government schemes and enables more accurate targeting of benefits to eligible residents.

How to do Address update in Aadhaar

To update your Aadhaar details online, you can follow these simple steps through the myAadhaar portal

  1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
  2. Login using your Aadhaar credentials and verify your details such as Name, Gender, Date of Birth, and Address.
  3. Click on 'Update Address' and agree to the consent terms to proceed.
  4. Upload a scanned copy of your proof of address and provide consent in the required format.
  5. Make payment of ₹50 (note: this fee is waived until September 14, 2024).
  6. After submission, you will receive a Service Request Number (SRN), which can be used to track your update status.

Once your update has passed the internal quality check, you will receive an SMS notification.

Updating Mobile Number in Aadhaar

Unlike address updates, mobile number updates require you to visit an Aadhaar enrollment center. The Aadhaar holder must be present for biometric authentication, and no documents are required for updating the mobile number. The fee for mobile number updates is ₹50 per request, which covers multiple demographic updates if needed.

What is mAadhaar and Where Can It Be Used?

The mAadhaar app allows Aadhaar holders to carry their Aadhaar information digitally. The app is more than just an electronic version of your Aadhaar card—it can be used anywhere in India as a valid ID proof. Additionally, it enables users to share their eKYC or QR code with service providers that require Aadhaar verification.

Verifying Date of Birth (DOB) in Aadhaar

Your Date of Birth (DOB) in Aadhaar will be marked as "verified" only if a valid proof of birth document was provided during enrolment or an update. If the operator selects the “declared” or “approximate” option, only the Year of Birth (YOB) will be printed on the Aadhaar letter.

Can a Resident Opt Out of Aadhaar?

According to UIDAI, residents have the option to not enroll for Aadhaar. Aadhaar is primarily a tool for service delivery and is not designed for any other purposes. It is non-transferable and remains dormant if not used, as its functionality relies on the physical presence and biometric authentication of the person.

However, children who are issued Aadhaar before they attain majority (18 years) can apply for its cancellation within 6 months of turning 18, as per the Aadhaar Act of 2016 and its regulations.

By providing this update, UIDAI ensures that individuals have ample time to review and update their Aadhaar details without additional costs. This move is expected to enhance the overall accuracy of Aadhaar information.
