Sanjukta Roy was more than just a musician; she was a trailblazer in the world of classical music in Odisha. Her journey began with a golden opportunity that many would dream of. In 1948, as a young and talented disciple of the famous classical instrumentalist Ustad Haafiz Ali Khan Saheb of Gwalior, she was invited to perform at the launch of the All India Radio (AIR) station in Cuttack. This was no ordinary performance—it was a historic moment that marked the beginning of Odisha's radio broadcasting journey, and Sanjukta Roy was at the center of it.

Her performance at the AIR-Cuttack station's launch was met with widespread acclaim, opening doors to more opportunities. Soon, she became a regular performer, not just for AIR-Cuttack, but also for AIR stations in Bombay (now Mumbai) and Delhi. Her melodious voice and mastery in Hindustani classical music earned her a special place in the hearts of music lovers across the country.

Sanjukta's journey in music was not just about performances; it was also about continuous learning and growth. Encouraged by the former Chief Minister of Odisha, Harekrushna Mahatab, she moved to Mumbai in 1954 to further hone her skills in classical music. The Odisha government awarded her a scholarship, allowing her to undergo rigorous training under some of the most respected gurus in Hindustani classical music. This training further solidified her reputation as a talented and dedicated artiste.

In addition to her classical music achievements, Sanjukta Roy also left her mark on Odia music. She was the voice behind many beloved Odia songs, including hits like ‘Bata Chada Subhata Nagar,’ ‘Mane Paduchi Bou,’ ‘Udigala Gendalia,’ ‘Baga Baguli,’ and ‘Mahua Bane Lo.’ These songs have stood the test of time, striking a chord with listeners across generations.

Throughout her life, Sanjukta Roy was celebrated for her contributions to music. All India Radio, Cuttack, felicitated her on numerous occasions, recognizing her pioneering role and her impact on the state's cultural heritage. Various cultural organizations also honored her, further cementing her status as a legend in Odisha's music scene.

As Odisha mourns the passing of this iconic figure, it is important to remember the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of passion, dedication, and excellence in music. Sanjukta Roy's life and work will continue to inspire future generations of musicians and artistes in Odisha and beyond.
