Landslides on Khordha-Balangir NH-57: A Growing Threat for Travelers

Daspalla, Odisha: (Reported by Ratnakar Hota): The Khordha-Balangir National Highway (NH-57) is an essential road connecting two major districts in Odisha. Every day, thousands of vehicles travel this route. However, a particular stretch of the highway, near Banibirighati in the Kulurukumpa Panchayat of Daspalla block, has become increasingly dangerous for travelers.

Daily Hazard

Travelers on NH-57, especially those passing through Banibirighati, are now facing a serious threat. The frequent landslides in this area have raised alarm among regular commuters and locals. The continuous heavy rains over the past few days have caused soil erosion, leading to massive landslides. These landslides bring down not just soil but also large rocks, which pose a significant risk to vehicles and passengers.

Why It’s Dangerous:

Landslides occur when the soil on a slope becomes too saturated with water, causing it to slip and slide down the slope. In the case of Banibirighati, the recent heavy rains have made the soil loose, resulting in frequent landslides. This stretch of the highway is particularly vulnerable due to its hilly terrain and the lack of proper drainage systems to manage the rainwater.

Calls for Action:

There have been increasing demands from the public for the National Highway authorities to address this issue. People are requesting the installation of warning boards on both sides of Banibirighati to alert travelers of the potential dangers. Such boards can help in slowing down the traffic and making drivers more cautious while passing through this risky stretch.

Possible Solutions:

To ensure the safety of travelers, immediate steps need to be taken. Some of the suggested measures include:

  • Warning Signs: Installing warning signs on both sides of the landslide-prone area to alert drivers.
  • Regular Monitoring: Conducting regular inspections of the vulnerable stretches to identify early signs of landslides.
  • Proper Drainage Systems: Constructing drainage systems to manage rainwater and prevent soil erosion.
  • Retaining Walls: Building retaining walls to hold back the soil and rocks, preventing them from sliding onto the road.
  • Emergency Response Teams: Setting up emergency response teams to act quickly in case of any landslide incidents.

Conclusion:

The Khordha-Balangir NH-57 is a vital route, and ensuring its safety is crucial. While landslides are natural, proactive measures can mitigate their impact. The installation of warning signs, proper drainage systems, and retaining walls are essential steps that need to be taken immediately. With the monsoon season in full swing, the authorities must act swiftly to protect travelers and prevent any tragic incidents.

Travelers are advised to be cautious while using this stretch of the highway and to stay updated on the latest road conditions. Safety should always come first, and with collective efforts from the community and authorities, the risks can be minimized.
