Indian Women’s Cricket Team Announced for T20 World Cup 2024: Harmanpreet Kaur to Lead

New Delhi: The Indian women’s cricket team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be played in the UAE in October, has been announced. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and deputy captain Smriti Mandhana will led the 15 members squad. 

The team selection reflects the selectors' focus on balancing experience and youth. Among the notable inclusions are wicket keeper, bats women Richa Ghosh and Yastika Bhatia, both of whom will play pivotal roles in India’s campaign. The squad has been placed in Group A, alongside top teams like Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, making for a challenging group stage.

Fitness Concerns Over Key Players 

Fitness concerns linger over two key players, Shreyanka Patil and Yastika Bhatia, as they recover from injuries. If declared fit before the tournament begins, both players will join the squad in the UAE. India, aiming for its first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup title, is looking to improve on its performance from 2020, where they reached the final but lost to Australia. 

Reserve Players Ready to Step Up 

The selectors have also announced three players – Uma Chetry, Tanuja Kanwar, and Saima Thakor – as reserve players who will travel with the team. Additionally, Raghavi Bist and Priya Mishra have been named as reserve players but will not travel with the squad to the UAE.

Ninth Edition of Women’s T20 World Cup 

This year marks the ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup. Australia, the most successful team in the tournament’s history, has won the title six times, including two title hat-tricks. They are aiming for their seventh title and fourth consecutive victory in this edition. Apart from Australia, only England and the West Indies have managed to win the Women’s T20 World Cup, each securing one title.
