Sand Artist Sudarsan Pattnaik Wins Gold at International Championship in Russia

Puri:  Padma Shri Sudarsan Pattnaik, a renowned sand artist from Odisha, has once again made India proud by winning the Golden Sand Master Award and a gold medal at the International Sand Sculpture Championship. The prestigious event was held at the iconic Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from July 4th to 12th.


Pattnaik's winning creation was a magnificent 12-foot sand sculpture depicting a chariot of Mahaprabhu Jagannath and His devoted follower, Balaram Das. His exceptional work stood out among 21 contestants from various countries, earning him the top honor on the final day of the competition.


Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, congratulated Pattnaik on his remarkable achievement. "Pattnaik's talent has brought pride and recognition to Odisha and the entire country," Majhi stated. He expressed hope that Pattnaik would continue to gain more fame in the future. 



After receiving the award, Pattnaik shared his joy on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. "Jai Jagannath! My sand chariot of Mahaprabhu Jagannath and His devoted follower Balaram Das has been honored with the Golden Sand Master Award and a Gold medal at the International Sand Sculpture competition in Saint Petersburg, Russia," he wrote.


The Indian Embassy in Russia also congratulated Pattnaik on X, praising his achievement. "Sudarsan Pattnaik makes India proud by winning the Gold Medal at the International Sand Sculpture Championship in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The competition featured 21 master artists from across the world."


Born on April 15, 1977, in Puri, Pattnaik started sculpting sand at the young age of seven. He founded the Golden Sand Art Institute in Puri in 1995, which was later renamed Sudarsan Sand Art Institute. The institute is dedicated to preserving and developing the ancient art of sand sculpting, a tradition dating back nearly 700 years to the time of Balaram Das in Puri. Many students from the institute have gone on to gain international acclaim.


Pattnaik has won numerous national and international awards throughout his career. He was honored with the Padma Shri award in 2014 and was appointed as the President of Odisha Academy of Fine Arts in 2018, a position he was re-appointed to in 2021.


Former Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, also extended his congratulations. "Renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik's win at the International Sand Sculpture Championship is a matter of pride for Odisha and India. All the best for your future endeavors, he said.

Sudarsan Pattnaik's latest achievement at the International Sand Sculpture Championship has once again highlighted his extraordinary talent and dedication, bringing glory to Odisha and India on the global stage.
