New Delhi, July 27, 2024 – At the ninth general council meeting of NITI Aayog, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi laid out a comprehensive vision for the state's development. He emphasized the need for several key projects to boost the state's economy, infrastructure and vision for a developed Odisha.
Development of Coastal Region
Chief Minister Majhi highlighted the potential of Odisha's 450 km long coastline. He suggested adopting a port-based development model to fully utilize this coastal area. Majhi proposed the creation of a large port-based industrial zone, which would not only enhance Odisha’s economic landscape but also establish the state as a gateway to East and Southeast Asia. This, he believes, would position Odisha as a crucial communication hub for neighboring states.
Support for Port-Based Industrial Areas
Majhi stressed the importance of developing industrial areas near the Dhamra and Gopalpur ports. To facilitate this, he requested the transfer of approximately 4,300 acres of saline land in Ganjam district from the Central Government to the State Government. This land would be used to develop new ports at Astarang, Palur, Bahuda, and Subarnarekha.
Financial Inclusion
The Chief Minister pointed out the need for better financial services in the state’s rural areas. He urged the Government of India to establish more commercial bank branches and ATMs in unbanked panchayats. Additionally, he called for improved telecom infrastructure to support these banking services.
Increasing Railway Density
Majhi noted that Odisha’s railway network is less dense compared to the national average. He requested the Central Government’s assistance to enhance railway density and improve related infrastructure in the state. This would significantly boost connectivity and economic growth.
Environmental Contributions and Challenges
Odisha has over 33% of its area covered by forests, making a substantial contribution to environmental protection. However, Majhi pointed out that this sometimes hinders development projects, affecting the state's economic progress. He sought the Central Government’s cooperation to find a permanent solution that balances environmental protection with developmental needs.
Making Odisha a Semiconductor Hub
In a bid to attract foreign investment, Majhi proposed making Odisha a hub for semiconductor manufacturing. He requested arrangements for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and the provision of advanced knowledge and skills necessary for this industry.
A Collaborative Vision for Development
"Our goal is to develop Odisha with the combined cooperation of the Central and State Governments," said Chief Minister Majhi. He stressed the importance of a united effort to achieve significant progress and prosperity for the state.
With these ambitious plans, Odisha aims to enhance its infrastructure, improve financial inclusion, and boost its economic growth while balancing environmental protection.
