NLC India and GMDC Win Big Coal Mines in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: In a major boost to India's energy security, state-owned NLC India Ltd has won a huge coal mine in Odisha. This mine, located in the Angul district, has around 1.38 billion tonnes of coal reserves and can produce up to 30 million tonnes of coal per year. This win was part of the eighth round of commercial coal block auctions.

NLC India, already managing the North Dhadu coal block, is now adding the Machhakata coal mine to its portfolio. The company is aiming to increase its coal production to over 100 million tonnes per year by 2030, up from the current 50 million tonnes. 

On the same day, the Coal Ministry signed agreements for three other coal mines. Besides NLC India's Machhakata mine, Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (GMDC) and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) also won coal blocks. GMDC secured the Kudanali-Lubri coal mine, and TANGEDCO got the Sakhigopal-B Kakurhi coal mine. 

GMDC’s new Kudanali-Lubri coal block has about 396 million tonnes of coal. This is GMDC’s third coal block in Odisha, bringing its total coal reserves to around 2040 million tonnes. Roopwant Singh, Managing Director of GMDC, stated that this new mine will help the company grow and be more efficient. 

These developments are significant steps for both NLC India and GMDC in securing more coal resources, which are vital for India's energy needs.
