Bhubaneswar: In a significant political development in Odisha, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Mohanta has resigned from her position in the Upper House. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar accepted her resignation, marking another setback for the BJD.
Mamata Mohanta's Resignation
Mamata Mohanta announced her resignation through a Facebook post. She stated, "I have resigned from my Rajya Sabha membership today. I have also sent my resignation letter to Biju Janata Dal President Naveen Patnaik. I am grateful for the opportunities given to me to serve my district Mayurbhanj and the state as a Zilla Parishad member and Rajya Sabha member."
Why Mamata Mohanta Left BJD
In her post, Mamata explained her decision, saying, "I felt that the party no longer needed my services. As a leader dedicated to serving the public, I found no reason to stay in the party. Therefore, I have resigned from the primary membership of the Biju Janata Dal and my Rajya Sabha seat." Mamata Mohanta was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2020.
Official Acceptance of the Resignation
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar confirmed receiving Mamata's resignation letter. He said, "I have received a letter from Mamata Mohanta, representing Odisha, in which she has resigned from her Rajya Sabha seat. I found the resignation constitutionally valid and have accepted it."
BJD's Struggles in Recent Elections
The BJD has faced several challenges recently, including a major defeat in the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections. For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formed the government in the state, securing 78 seats and ending BJD's 24-year rule under Naveen Patnaik. Mohan Charan Majhi was elected as the Chief Minister, with Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida serving as Deputy Chief Ministers. Naveen Patnaik has been appointed the Leader of the Opposition.
Speculations on Mamata Mohanta Joining BJP
Mamata Mohanta's resignation has fueled speculation that she may join the BJP. This move could further impact the political landscape in Odisha, especially given the BJP's recent electoral success in the state.
This significant political shift highlights the dynamic nature of politics in Odisha and sets the stage for further developments as parties and leaders navigate the changing landscape.
