New Delhi: The Government of India has officially designated June 25 as "Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas" to mark the remembrance of the Emergency imposed in 1975 by the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. The decision aims to remember the severe impact on India's democracy during this period, marked by mass incarcerations and media censorship.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the significance of this day as a stark reminder of the dangers faced when the Constitution is undermined. He expressed that the observance would honour those who suffered due to the Emergency and highlight the necessity of safeguarding democratic values.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju highlighted the necessity of this commemoration, stating, "We can never forget how the Constitution was murdered on the night of 25th June 1975. It is our duty to save the Constitution and ensure such atrocities are never repeated."
BJP National President JP Nadda echoed these sentiments, praising the Prime Minister for this initiative. He noted that 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' would serve as an annual reminder of the importance of democracy and the sacrifices made to protect it.
However, the announcement has sparked a range of reactions across the political spectrum. Congress leaders have criticized the move, arguing it is a diversionary tactic by the BJP. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar remarked, "After the Emergency, the Congress party has ruled this country with Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, and P. V. Narasimha Rao. The citizens of this nation have rekindled their trust in the Congress party.
RJD leader Manoj Jha also condemned the government's decision, accusing the BJP of destroying the Constitution themselves. He stated, "Look who is talking? They have destroyed the Constitution... The people of India will not fall for your 'jumlas' now."
Similarly, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh and AAP leader Priyanka Kakkar accused the BJP of attempting to distract from current issues. Ghosh mentioned, "BJP is trying to divert attention from its anti-people policy, disasters, and the bad condition of the country by playing this old card." Kakkar added, "Since 2014, BJP has murdered the Constitution every day... Constitution was murdered when BJP brought electoral bonds."
Despite these criticisms, BJP leaders remain steadfast in their decision. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated, "The Congress party has been stained with the blood of killing democracy. The citizens of this nation must remember this."
As the nation approaches the first observance of 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas,' the debate over the Emergency and its legacy continues to evoke strong emotions and political discourse.
