Bhitarkanika Reopens: Discover the Hidden Gem of Odisha

A Brief History

Bhitarkanika National Park is not just any ordinary park. It is a mangrove ecosystem, which means it is filled with unique plants and animals that thrive in salty, coastal environments. Established in 1975, the park spans over 672 square kilometers and includes tidal rivers, estuaries, and mudflats. It's a paradise for wildlife lovers, especially those fascinated by reptiles and birds.

The Crocodile Breeding Season

Every year, from May 1 to July 31, Bhitarkanika closes to the public for a very important reason – crocodile breeding. During this time, the park's saltwater crocodiles become more aggressive as they protect their nests and young ones. To ensure the safety of visitors and to provide a peaceful environment for the crocodiles, the park is shut down. This break is crucial for the survival and health of the crocodile population, making Bhitarkanika one of the most successful breeding grounds for these magnificent reptiles.

Exciting New Additions

This year, Bhitarkanika National Park has introduced a fantastic new feature: the Sky Walk Bridge. This elevated walkway allows visitors to explore the park from above, offering a bird's-eye view of the lush mangroves and the diverse wildlife below. As you walk along the bridge, you'll hear the melodic chirping of colorful birds and might even spot some of them perched on the branches. The bridge starts near the mangrove nursery and extends to a large area where herds of deer gather. It's an experience that brings you closer to nature without disturbing the animals in their habitat.

Wildlife Galore

Bhitarkanika is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife. Apart from the famous saltwater crocodiles, you can find spotted deer, wild boars, and monkeys. The park is also a haven for bird watchers, with over 200 species of birds, including kingfishers, sea eagles, and migratory birds from as far as Europe and Central Asia. During the winter months, the park becomes a vibrant mosaic of colors as thousands of birds arrive to escape the cold.

Exploring Bhitarkanika

Visiting Bhitarkanika is like stepping into a different world. The best way to explore the park is by boat, gliding through the serene waters surrounded by mangrove forests. These boat rides offer a unique perspective of the park, allowing you to see the crocodiles basking on the riverbanks, deer grazing in the meadows, and various birds flying overhead.

For those who love trekking, there are several trails that take you deep into the heart of the park. These trails are perfect for observing the flora and fauna up close and learning about the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem.
